I am officially at an age where I need to really consider what goes in my, so called, anti-aging product as I am going to need more than a standard moisturiser to keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay. I decided to take to the internet and look for skin care ingredients that are evidence based, a product that stands out is a Retinoid or vitamin A product, because my skin is obnoxiously sensitive I opted to look for a product without fragrance and with additional skin soothing ingredients. . .

. . . enter First Aid Beauty FAB Skin Lab Retinol Serum .25% Pure Concentrate.

I have been using this product for 3 months and honestly I love it! It is a very light but still creamy serum that looks like custard (does NOT taste like custard) and smells like basically nothing. It contains an array of very exciting ingredients including:

1. Retinol

Retinol (Vitamin A) is an anti-aging powerhouse, really something that you need to consider if you are serious about keeping your skin looking youthful and firm for as long as possible. It works as an exfoliator product that helps slough off dead skin cells to help aid in product absorption, lightening of pigmentation, reduction of fine lines and wrinkles all while stimulating collagen production! Unfortunately there is a catch, it takes your skin a while to get used to Retinol and it may cause some redness, irritation, dryness and flakiness. This should not be a deterrent as your skin does get used to it after a few weeks (and this serum comes with built in ingredients to help sooth and nourish the skin) and when its applied twice a week at first and then gradually increased these side effects are minimal.

2. Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is an extremely moisturising oil that is rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties while also aiding in wound healing. Great product to help counteract the dryness that is sometimes associated with the use of a Retinol.

3. Colloidal Oatmeal

THE ingredient you need if you have sensitive or reactive skin as it has very strong anti-inflammatory properties while also helping with barrier repair, this is very effective at soothing irritation that may be caused by using a Retinol product.

4. Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is the hydrating superstar in the skin care industry due to its ability to bind with water molecules, like those present in the air, and effectively glueing it to the skin resulting in plump and glowing skin.

5. Ceramide NP

Ceramides are very potent moisturising factors that are naturally found in the skin it is a very helpful product for healing the barrier function of the skin and to offset flakiness that can be a side effect of the Retinol.

I simply smooth this serum on to a cleansed face and wait roughly 30 seconds before going in with a rich but cheap (hey I know where to splurge and where to save) night cream and I must say I have seen results. Retinol itself is sensitive to sun light and can increase the harmful effect of UV radiation on the skin, so it is best used at night and remember to use your SPF the next morning! It is worth mentioning that because this product is so rich in moisturising ingredients it may be moisturising enough to use it on its own without any additional creams or lotions, its all about what YOUR skin needs.

This is an expensive product but seeing it is the only “active” product I use at night it is worth the investment, there are other options on the market that are more budget friendly, if you want to test the waters. If you are a person who deeply appreciates swanky packaging you are in luck with this product as it is in a fancy pump contraption that is spill proof and travels well . . . and is soooo pretty.

All in all this is a five star product in my opinion, and I will continue to repurchase and love it! Get it here.

Thank you so much for reading this blog post. Let me know in the comment section down below if you have ever tried a Retinol product and how you liked it.

Have a beautiful day.
