Beauty BS: Detoxing the Skin.

We often see products (both affordable and luxury alike) that claim to detox the skin or draw out impurities, but what does that even mean? Is it really something that you need?Or, is it just a marketing ploy?

Dictionary.com defines detoxing as “treatment designed to rid the body of poisonous substances, especially alcohol and drugs” sounds good right? Who has not eaten or drank something unhealthy (maybe one mimosa too many?), that the body needs to get rid of, so it can function at its best. Luckily we have lungs, kidneys and livers (not to mention certain parts of the digestive tract) to help the body eliminate these unwanted substances.

The above mentioned organs are specifically designed to detox or clean your system, your skin, on the other hand is a organ whose main function is to PROTECT the body. The skin works hard to prevent water loss from occurring, to create a barrier to keep out micro organisms and to help regulate the temperature of the body. When you look at the skin from a scientific and anatomical point of view you realise that products that claim to detox the skin are hogwash, to put it lightly.

It is important to really look into ingredients in the product you want to spend your hard earned cash on. There are lots of resources on the internet that will help you determine what your skin needs vs what can ultimately be drying, which in turn can impact the barrier function of the skin, which means that your skin can not protect you as it should.

Thank you so much for reading this post, I hope it was helpful. Let me know in the comment section down below what Buzzwords I should look into next.

Have a beautiful day.

xx
